If teachers suspect that a student has suffered one of these injuries, they must report their suspicions of child abuse and neglect to the appropriate authorities. A teacher does not need to make sure a child is being abused before reporting to the principal. Reports are treated confidentially. 20.8 | 20 © Wadsworth, Cengage Learning Students and the Law Suspension and expulsion Teacher: Pregnancy, parenthood and marriage Corporal punishment Search and seizure Freedom of expression Sexual harassment Records and students` right to privacy 15 8 | 15 © Wadsworth, Cengage Learning Freedom of Expression – Cannot interfere with the functioning of schools – Students` rights may be restricted Symbolic expression – May be restricted if it disrupts the academic expression of cyberspace Academic freedom – Not absolutely 6 8 | © 6 Wadsworth, Cengage Learning The Teacher and the Law «In loco parentis» in the Past Attitudes towards school education have changed in recent decades – many students are often more obsessed with their rights than their responsibilities Chapter 4 Dental Ethics Copyrights 2003, Elsevier Science (USA).
