Luke 23:56 And they returned and prepared spices and ointments; and rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. As for the first reason, there is no doubt that it has ceased in Christ; Because he is the truth by the presence of which all images disappear. He is the reality at the arrival of which all shadows are abandoned. Hence St. Paul (Colossians 2:17) that the Sabbath was a shadow of a reality that is not yet here. And he explains his truth elsewhere when he tells us in the Letter to the Romans, chap. 6:8, teaches that we are buried with Christ so that we may die by His death from the corruption of our flesh. And this does not happen in a day, but throughout our lives, until we are completely dead within ourselves, we can be filled with God`s life. Therefore, the superstitious observance of days must remain away from Christians. 35 Moses gathered the whole Israelite Church and said to them, «This is what the Lord has commanded you to do: 2 Work for six days, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath day (B) of rest for the Lord. Anyone who works there must be killed. (C) 3 Do not light fires in any of your homes on the Sabbath. (D) Just as the truth was given to the Jews in one form, so on the contrary, the truth is shown to us without shadow, that we may meditate all our lives on the eternal Sabbath day of our works, so that the Lord may work in us through His Spirit; secondly, that we may observe the legitimate order of the Church, listen to the Word of God, administer the sacraments, and pray in public; Third, so that we do not inhumanely oppress those who are subjected to us by work.
[From Instruction in Faith, Calvin`s own compendium of Calvin`s 1537 institutes, section 8, «The Law of the Lord.»] Numbers 15:32–36 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man picking up sticks on the Sabbath. Traditionally, Seventh-day Adventists have argued that the Ten Commandments (including the fourth Sabbath commandment) are part of God`s moral law and are not superseded by the teachings of Jesus Christ, which also apply to Christians. [54] Adventists have traditionally distinguished between «moral law» and «ceremonial law,» arguing that moral law continues to bind Christians, while events predicted by ceremonial law were accomplished by Christ`s death on the cross. [ref. needed] Exodus 31:13 Speak also to the children of Israel, saying, Verily thou shalt keep my Sabbaths; for it is a sign between you and me through your generations; that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you. Deuteronomy 5:14–15 But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God; thou shalt not work, thou shalt not work thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy servant, nor thy ox, nor thy donkey, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger who is at thy gates; that your servant and handmaid may rest as well as you. «Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy» (Hebrew: זָכוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ zāḵōr `eṯ-yōm haš-šabbāṯ lə-qaddəšōw) is one of the Ten Commandments[1] of the Torah. In each dispensation, the Lord commanded His people to «remember the Sabbath, and keep it holy» (Exodus 20:8). Many promises and blessings are given to those who keep the law of the Sabbath.
For example, in Jeremiah`s day, the Lord promised to spare Jerusalem and its inhabitants if they kept the Sabbath (see Jeremiah 17:20–27). In our day, the Lord has promised us the «fulness of the earth» if we keep this commandment (D&C 59:16). This is one of the laws dearest to God`s heart. Yet it is mentioned much more in its desecration than in its acceptance and good observance» (Mark E. Petersen, in Conference Report, Apr. 1975, 70; or Ensign, May 1975, 47). So the Sabbath is a reminder of the exodus from Egypt, and the Exodus is a reminder of the Sabbath, because they remember it [the Sabbath] and say that it is Elohim who. created everything at the beginning of creation. Now, he has not explained here [in Deuteronomy] that the reason for the rest [on the Sabbath] is that Jehovah made heaven in six days, since this has already been mentioned several times in the Torah.
Instead of. he explained to them that since the exodus from Egypt, they will know that it was he who spoke and that the world came into existence, and that he stopped working on it. [26] Seventh-day Adventists observe the Friday Sabbath from sunset to sunset on Saturday. [54] In places where the sun does not appear or set for several months, such as northern Scandinavia, an arbitrary hour tends to be considered 6 p.m. as a «sunset.» On the Sabbath, Adventists avoid secular labor and affairs, although medical aid and humanitarian work are excluded. Although there are cultural variations, most Adventists also avoid activities such as shopping, sports, and some forms of entertainment. Adventists usually gather for worship on Saturday mornings. Some also gather on Friday evenings to greet the Sabbath hours (sometimes called «vespers» or «opening Sabbath»), and others also the «closing Sabbath.» We believe that the Lord`s Day, celebrated throughout the Christian Church on Sunday, the first day of the week, is the Christian Sabbath, which we reverently observe as a day of rest and worship and as an ongoing memorial of our Savior`s Resurrection. For this reason, on this holy day, we renounce worldly work and all merchandising, except what requires mercy or necessity.
[51] The Catholic Church considers the commandment to «remember and sanctify the Sabbath» (2. Moses 20:8–10), as an essential part of keeping the commandment to «love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.» (Mark 2:27-28) [31] Catholic doctrine emphasizes the sanctity of the Sabbath (Exodus 31:15),[32] combines the Sabbath with God`s rest after the six days of creation (Exodus 20:11),[33] views the Sabbath as a reminder of Israel`s deliverance from slavery (Deuteronomy 5:15),[34] and regards the example of the seventh-day resting God as an example of human rest and protest against labor slavery and the worship of money. (Exodus 31:17; 23:12) [35] The Catechism of the Catholic Church discusses numerous incidents in which Jesus was accused of violating the law of the Sabbath, emphasizing that Jesus never fails to respect the holiness of that day. (Mark 1:21, John 9:16) Jesus is described as giving his authentic and authoritative interpretation to the law of the Sabbath: «The Sabbath was made for man, not for man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27) With compassion, Christ proclaims the Sabbath because He does good and does no harm, because He saves lives, not kills. (Mark 3:4) [36] But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God: in him thou shalt do no work, neither thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy servant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger who is at thy gates: Exodus 31:12-17 (12) And the Lord said to Moses and said, (13) Speak also to the children of Israel, Say, truly, ye shall keep my Sabbaths, for there is a sign between me and you through your generations; that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.
