Some countries, such as New Zealand, decided to legalize prostitution and subsequently noted that «condom use among sex workers has increased to over 99%. (Bazelon). Indian sex workers` collectives also provide evidence to support this claim; «The collectives were initially adept at slowing the spread of H.I.V…. Melinda Gates says. Gates also wrote in the Seattle Times about Gita, the sex worker who, along with other sex workers, «helped increase condom use in her county from zero to 70 percent and reduce HIV infection rates to 7 percent — compared to rates of up to 66 percent among sex workers elsewhere.» The evidence that Bazelon shows is very powerful because other papers usually provide theory-based evidence about what the outcome will be. This is based on the fact that they tried this in different countries and it resulted in the same result. The fact that the New York Times published this author`s article shows that he should be a reliable and credible source, as the articles they publish go through numerous background checks and plagiarism. The article seems to be well researched and well written, as it provides counter-arguments and understands that there are reasons to keep the other side but opt for the decriminalization of prostitution because the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Many people who believe that the illegality of prostitution only benefits everyone involved believe that it is the best way to keep things in peace. Julie Bindel believes that decriminalizing prostitution will only allow pimps to hide from the law, and therefore increase the number of sex trafficking cases, as this trafficking still takes place in places where prostitution has been legalized, such as Nevada. The text states: «What I discovered while researching campaigns to legalise or decriminalise prostitution in the Netherlands, Ireland and the UK is that sex industry bosses have an influential voice in such campaigns.» She believes that the people these women «represent» and their desires for what they think make them safer are generally «just as likely to be a voice for pimps.» Prostitution brings a huge income and since the trade is not legalized, the state does not receive its share, the state budget is not filled with the financial injection of the prostitution industry.
Participants in the legalized trade, in our case prostitution, participate in the economic affairs of the state. When they pay taxes, they try to claim social guarantees (such as unemployment insurance, health insurance, old-age pension). In turn, the government can provide some inspection and monitoring of prostitutes` working conditions and, in some cases, help improve them (Nathanson & Young, 2006). In summary, the purpose of this essay was to convince you that prostitution should be legalized. As you have read, prostitution is not as negative as we think. While legalization has its pros and cons, it`s important to weigh them. Although the evidence is not as reliable as it could be, the author`s references, reliability, and use of multiple reasons support her conclusions. According to Business Insider, she was a «senior reporter at Law360.com, where she covered the Supreme Court, gender bias trials, and litigation… This shows that she has knowledge in the field in which she is researching and that she has repeatedly studied topics relevant to this topic, namely prostitution. Opponents who say that decriminalizing prostitution would increase violence against prostitutes provide no such evidence to support their argument, and all of their examples are hypothetical scenes. This makes their argument weak because the other side has strong and reliable evidence, as it has been tried in different parts of the world, as opposed to their evidence, which is guesswork about what might happen, but they don`t know for sure. Bindel also bases her judgment on morality and what is ethically right or wrong when she says, «Prostitution as a form of violence in a neoliberal world where human flesh is seen as a commodity, as a hamburger.» It is also a weak analogy, because when it compares the sale of meat from a transformed dead animal to a living human and exchanges sex for money, not skin for money.
Prostitutes do not detach their body parts from their anatomy to sell, but fulfill their clients` desires for what makes them happy. Another weakness of the author is the evidence she provides. This is a weakness because the evidence is unreliable because it is research that she has done that has not been supported by different people. It provides research that contributes to its side and doesn`t really take into account the counter-argument. One strength identified in the passage is that the explanation of its various reasons is well written and effectively supported by reasoning. The author`s area of expertise is superior to that of most writers and is therefore considered a strength. According to «The Guardian», «Julie Bindel is an independent journalist and political activist and a founder of Justice for Women» that she is a politically active person, explains her bias. Others who support the decriminalization of prostitution suggest that it could reduce violence against women. Erin Fuchs` article, which takes the side of legalizing prostitution, shows why legalization can do more harm than good to women. According to Fuchs, «Prostitutes in America (mostly women) are vulnerable to violence from clients and pimps. A study conducted in San Francisco found that 82% had been assaulted while working and 68% had been raped. Another study of Colorado Springs prostitutes found that they were 18 times more likely to be murdered than non-prostitutes of their age and race.
While this article provides reasonable and understandable evidence, it is unreliable because it does not provide details about the origin of the statistics, and a «San Francisco study» is a very general and broad term. This study provides relevant evidence if true, but similar evidence from different geographic locations would make its argument more palatable. Prostitution must therefore be legalized for several reasons. The state budget will increase because the prostitution trade operates with huge sums of money. Prostitution exists and it is impossible to cancel it, so the government should at least protect prostitutes from pressure and violence. Every human being is free in his actions in relation to his body. If women want to have sex for money, let them do it, it`s their choice and their body, so it`s impossible to ban. Bindel provides evidence that occurred in a Nevada brothel with a young woman who was «sold.» and considered a business. meant that the pimp could present himself as doing his colleague a favor by giving him a job. This shows that the statement she said earlier is true and that pimps are hiding behind her money. The author bases her judgement on her research and does not indicate the sources from which she receives her information, which weakens her statement because it is unreliable. Bindel admits his own bias in the article she wrote, when he says: » abolitionist position – preferred by feminists, including myself… This weakens their article because it shows that their judgment is unreliable because it is based on opinions.
She was already opposed to the decriminalization of prostitution, so bias may have influenced her interpretation of the evidence. Every human being has the right to freedom: freedom of thought, freedom of expression, freedom of choice and also freedom to use his body. The person`s choice whether or not to have sex, whether or not to take money for it, can never be legal or illegal.
